2/6/17 pruning semi dwarf apple trees

I spent this seldom warm February day in the orchard of mineral hills winery. Pruning apple trees is essential for commercial operations depending on a equal harvest each year. Without pruning, apple trees will have an over load of fruit which leads to biannual fruiting. It can be overwhelming to look at an apple tree in need of a hair cut. It's best I've learned to start by cutting the water shoots first and then work through each tier focusing on branches that cross over or do not comply with the form you are looking for. I treat each tree as being a unique individual, by respecting its growth patterns and form. That being said it's an artistic relationship that develops over time.

Max is the old guard dog, the 2 other pups enjoy the orchard work too !

Mineral hills winery, uses the apples for an apple wine, and an ice wine.
